Crime & omniscient guards..
Without being too specific and spoiling anything, I did a quest to kill somebody within a town. I did this as a stealth kill at night, which I carried out flawlessly without being seen.
I also deliberately didn't steal anything from the home/victim that would link me to the crime.
And yet somehow I am still wanted for arrest in that town.. HOW? No evidence, no witnesses.. wtf?

Does the wanted status eventually go away or is the town just a permanent no-go zone for me now?

Did you walk through the town prior to or after killing that guy? Once anyone sees you around they count 1+1 together and just suspect you even if they didn´t see you doing it. Seems like it´s best to sneak in, do the crime and then get out and away asap.

Yeah they see a stranger come into town and stuff goes missing so they assume its you. If you are less conspicuous in your clothes and appearance or sneak into town as hump recommended you can avoid them pegging you for the crime. You described being totally sneaky though, so the crime system may be kinda bugged.

yeah, the crime system still needs work.. the good news is that the bounty will go away (even for murder) after a few days..
You actually did the quest? No one does that quest. The lady in the woods is obviously a witch and murdered the baby.

Possibly prior to, but afterwards I just stealthed away into the forest.
It's a stupid system if being seen in town at all is enough to pin a crime on you. Any defence lawyer would have a field day if that was their only evidence.

Well that's a relief then.
I had the same experience when picking my first lock and stealing a few things in Troskowitz. Nobody saw me do it, and nobody had gone up to the room to notice anything missing. But shortly after I started walking away, a guard is randomly yelling at me for a stop-and-search.. (again, seemingly omniscient).

What makes you say it's "obvious" exactly? Pavlena verifies her story about the birth simply going wrong.

It is annoying, true, but it's not stupid. It's most realistic and complex crime and punishment system I've ever seen in RPGs.

It´s the middle ages. Everyone knows everyone in town but you are a stranger and thus the first one supected if anything odd happens.

Suspicion doesn't amount to proof. I could see losing some reputation but not outright wanted for arrest.

Would you prefer it to be like other game where once the NPC 'state' changes to not alerted you can just walk out in the open with no consequence? I find that more annoying than the system in KCD 2.
Yeah it's broken.
Just did the Miller's quest to steal documents. Did it successfully, nobody saw me. Next day I'm somehow wanted again.
As I leveled up my thieving, I believe it was, any crime evidence disappears faster and so does my loot. I've definitely found seemingly janky occurrences, like weeks later I'll be passing time and someone will suddenly say I've been loitering and thieves stole, and suddenly I'm wanted. Happened a couple time for no discernible reason.

If random robberies happen once you come into town 2+2
Unless they would kill you directly.

Nobody saw me enter town on the document stealing quest. I hid and skipped time until dark, then stealthed into town. Never alerted anybody, and stealthed away afterwards.
