Whoever made the "For whom the bells tolls" quest sucks
This is the worst designed quest I think ive ever done. There are no clear directions, guards at every single corner, and you almost have to run past everything and barely make it. Its not even a skill issue, because theres a guard infront of the stairs you cant distract that is just there. I had all I needed, but you cant leave without getting recognised. Chamberlain wont talk to you and let you go into the tower, its soooo bad. I belive this was added just incase someone didnt reach the 2 hour mark yet for a refund. Wonder how some will defend this one. I enjoy the game otherwise, but holy fk this one sucks.

it's pretty awful. i made it all the way up the stairs only to realize that the only way to complete the quest was to pick the apothecary's locked chest. small problem: no lockpicks. lol. I had to use console commands to get it open. the stealth isn't quite so bad when you realize that you can just spam throw rock and the guards will, like utter idiots, walk directly to the place you hit. it's insane how bad the AI is, but it makes sneaking trivial. also, the writers tease you into jumping down the well... but it's totally pointless. there's actually no reason to do it. it just breaks your ankle and takes half of your health away for no reason, dumping you out where you could easily have gotten anyway. also, if you knock out a guard to disguise yourself--you know, making use of game mechanics--you're instantly recognized somehow? what? how?

The worst part of it is that in the end, the whole thing is pointless! Even though you succeed, the captain doesn't reveal your identity, and you "fail" anyway. What a joke. Totally indefensible.

yup. that quest is way too hard and without a video showing you exactly what to do it is impossible.
this is the only quest in which i cheated to get lockpicks and save without savior schnapps because you need it desperately
The quest overall was pretty good.
You have only limited Time, but there is plenty so no rush needed (finished it around 3rd bell ring out of 12). I had only picked one lock until this quest and I could still do it.
You need to lockpick ONE easy lock to get flowers (or gather them in the yard) to brew the fever potion....
The potion for the sick guy is stored on a shelf, pick it up... done.
You can get around 1-4 lockpicks easy by talking/looting and if you have done some smithing and the lockpick perk there, you can get at least one more through the smith quest.

ADDITIONAL there is a whole sneak option alternative for all of this as well :D

So... more then 3 different ways of solving the quest.
None of them involves skills above starting level.

Whats the issue?
The Captain was cured, confirmed my Identity, Lord comes in, gives us back all cloth and we are fine lords back again...

I managed to do it, somehow, but with the last bell just a few mins off. Legit hours on this.
Yeah the quest was complete trash, and spoiler alert it gets worse.

I managed to do it by just sprinting by every single guard, getting lucky to find a single lockpick that I needed for the herbs, and then just finishing making the potion and finishing the quest.

As if that wasn't bad enough, 3 main missions later you have to do the same thing but even worse somehow.
The moment you do a sidequest it opens up new areas of the castle you're allowed to be in. That should have been a sign on what you had to do. It wasn't exactly subtle about it.

It has no quest icons to who you need to talk except the first ones to to actually progress the best way, except for the first with crafting a horseshoe. The chamberlain gave me no chance, and only told me to leave.

The quest really wasn't that hard, to get full access to the castle all you had to do was finish carrying the coal then go and talk to the Chamberlain, pass some skill checks to help him, and he gives you access to the apothecary. You can easily buy lockpicks from the Saddler guy near the entrance, but you need to talk to one of the convicts in the yard first to learn that. You can easily get the money for the picks by either stealing a few pieces of gear in the castle, or pickpocketing some money off guards. Once you get in the apothecary, you can make the Captain's medicine and grab a painkiller potion for the Chamberlain. After giving the Chamberlain the potion, he gives you access to the chaple.

It's not that hard of a quest, you just need to not panic and talk to people.
It's an old school RPG, figure out what you're supposed to do yourself, it gives you a general gist and it's up to you to achieve it yourself. If you can think of a logical thing to do, it often exists, the game almost always gives you multiple routes to achieve a goal.
