Requires you to pay attention to what you're doing and choosing how to balance full blown alcoholism vs making poor choices.
One of my favourite mechanics.
The reason I don't mind the requirement of a potion is that the game is quite lenient on autosaves, it allows you to save in beds (one you get very early) and it pushes you to engage in a core mechanic of the game. Gathering and alchemy.
Now I get it might not be what you enjoy, I totally get it. But from a mechanical point of view, it does what it aims for. It makes you think about when to save in the early stages. And it makes you do the mini game that brews potions.
In my game I still have not gotten an invitation to the weeding, and I have done some sidequests (not them all). But I have been exploring and just enjoyed my time. This has resulted in me getting herbs which I have used to brew potions.
I walk around with 5 of the best ss pots as they give a great buff, some of the lowest quality I buy. The rest is either on my horse or in my chest for later use.
I am curious do you also find the weight capacity annoying? because that is a bigger problem and for way longer then saving.
I get why this is an immersive mechanic in a game that is all about immersion. And 16yo me would've happily skipped school to waste away my endless sparetime to play this game.
40yo me has to pay bills though and wonders how he ever got the time for games like this? 40yo me goes to the Nexus and downloads a quicksave mod. :D (After I buy the game eventually, that is.)
40 year old you should be able to spend 10 min, to make enough saving potions to last you the entire game.
40 year old you should be able to save and quit whenever you want, just like the rest of us are able to.
40 year old you get the first free bed you can sleep and save in, just after the tutorial, just like the rest of us.
Having saving pots is not the issue, you not having time seems to be the issue. And that I can understand! (32, family father)
Also a great way to collect free schnapps... as many of them will have one or two.. not forgetting treasure hunts
Exploration is how this is meant to be played.
I can see your point, that's the thing though, you are forced as a player to deal with gathering, alchemy, and alcohol effect of the schnapps unless you want to risk losing a full day of questing or exploring.
I don't even feel the need for endless save slots, an autosave after having engaged in a fight or a timed autosave (something like 15 minutes) would be plenty.
The problem is you wake up in the morning, work at the forge, explore, eat, sell the loot from the day before, explore the map and 1 hour later you meet am ambush and three guys end it all (with dubious fighting mechanic on top of that)
So, in other words, you *chose* not to save your progress, went blundering around the open world, met with some crims and died.
...and the lost progress is somehow *not* your fault?
Is that how this works? Really?
I... that's..... OK then.
I'm getting a save mod.
I have a reddit thread where I am showing the locations of beds you can save in (you have to buy or earn them). If you need help with buying a bed, do tell me.

It's a little further down as I didn't start it right away, but I write the locations name and show it with a picture and a short description. It might help you.
