As I recall, in KCD1 it would just say that locks were 'too difficult' more often (when you were at low skill level) and you couldn't even try to lockpick them, I think KCD2 let's you try to lockpick more chests that are in reality too hard for you to have much chance of success.
I ignored lockpicking and pickpocketing during my run through in the first area. Just wasn’t the play style I was running with at the time, In Kattenburg I went to do the thief guild quest and couldn’t open the door to get a needed item, which I heavily regretted not doing the millers quest run entirely or leveled thievery much.
In the end, I ran to an apothecary and purchased a strong quick finger potion, and ta da…opened the door.
