You can follow the Main Quest to either the Blacksmith or the other guy down at Semine, they'll both offer you a permanent room with a storage chest you can use. The storage chest is a shared storage, so you can also access it by renting a room at an Inn.
For money, Alchemy can very, very easily break the economy. Just with the ingredients you can find at the meadow the old woman sends you to, you can make plenty of potions to sell to the Apothecary and to the General Store clerk, which will provide plenty of groshen early on.
