GPU? Maybe VRAM issue.
Maybe you had some system memory locked up in another task. Try restarting the PC, and launch the game again with minimum other processes, apps, overlays etc running in the background.

Quite true.
With my previous platform (Ryzen 2700) I was running with 32 GB of RAM and saw some games using up as much as 12-15 GB of memory. Keep in mind that is ON TOP OF what the OS (in this case Windows) was using. which was about 3 GB, so 15-18 GB in all. Currently running with 64 GB (Ryzen 7950 X3D) and while I don't expect any game for the next few years to be using any more than 24 GB of memory by itself. I'll have the comfort of knowing that I have plenty of excess for that rare unicorn of a game that does need more.
Ah yes, the horribly unoptimized "unicorn"
