Well, the game has sneaking, lockpicking and pickpocketing, and you can sneak up on enemies and stab them in the back with a dagger, so.,.. I guess you can go ahead and start sneaking :) Enjoy

Yes you can, but it is a bit more challenging than in other games, at least at the beggining. With every piece of clothes or armor making noise and have different degrees of visibility (being naked makes you pretty much center of attention) + guards will try check your pockets at random, if you look like a vagabond or a lot of things got missing in village.

And now having in game punishment system, where you can get branded with hot iron as criminal and in the end getting hanged is pretty wild :D

You need to be able to spell it correctly first ;)

According to this thread https://steamcommunity.com/app/1771300/discussions/0/601895505111288552/ thief builds have been nerfed into oblivion, and you will actually go to jail even if you are not "caught". Roleplaying a thief is apparently dead. Makes all those cool skills kinda useless and kills a huge part of the fun of the game for me at least.
Theiving works if you plan to murder, pickpocket, or knock people out only. Stealing items on the ground/on shelves/in shops seems to always be telepathically linked back to you though. Use rocks or follow someone out to a secluded place, and pickpocket, knock out, or murder them, then steal all their stuff. As long as they didn't see you for the first two, and no one else saw you for the last one, the crime will never be linked back to you.

I've been able to steal, although it's after I bludgeon them to death in a secluded location.

Yeah I heard you can do that but I find that extreme, kinda unfun (roleplaywise) that to be a succesful thief you also need to become a murderer.

Knocking them unconscious or pickpocketing works too, they just can't see you sneaking around beforehand. I've robbed the entire starting town of trovstikwitz or whatever entirely naked just to see if I could, and no one was the wiser cuz I lured them out one by one and choked them out. They would get up and go about their day entirely naked, waving to me as I Walked by, being the only person in the town wearing clothes. It just seems to stealing items laying on the ground or in shelves in shops that is ridiculous.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Yes, but it's tricky and not like most stealth games. If you're expecting it to be like stereotypical stealth games, you'll find it frustrating. Once you get a rhythm for how this game handles stealth and notoriety, it'll become much easier (though still tricky).
Stealing without murder is virtually impossible. The people can be asleep, never see you, wake up and then know it was you that was there hours ago. It's trash, simple as

Maybe a bug? In KCD1 if people were asleep you could rob their houses and pickpocket them for keys, etc.

There are bugs, basically KCD2 tried to add this system where NPC's will remember if they've seen the player hanging around. And then if they notice a crime later on, say they find a body, or notice something missing, they'll be like "Oi, that bloke 'enry wus 'ere, I bet he did it, I reckon!" The problem is, dead bodies that aren't your fault, or things you stole before ages before meeting the person, or ages after being seen in town, are traced back to you once discovered. You can be blamed for a murder you didn't do, just because some idjit you waved to on the road found a couple of dead bodies murdered by a bandit an hour later.

I want to believe this is the case, as I'm going to new towns I've never been to and people are still saying I have stolen or murdered. The system is ♥♥♥♥, but looks cool when you see it in action when it WORKS

Yes.
The Miller explains to you how.
For example by wearing darkish light clothing, only a dagger and so on.
You can be a thief, the game just won't let you lol. Unless you murder the whole household, you WILL be magically discovered as the perp sooner or later. In fact, I once did just that. Killed the WHOLE household at night, undetected, no AI even around the house, left in the darkness and rested in another area....BAM, "you dun did a naughty in town and pegged for the naughty". The system needs work, its is beyond terrible.

Related, I can even go to new towns I've never even been to and STILL get told I did something there lmao
