I guess because they want to sell to everyone to max profit, they knew there is side of crowd don't like it, and other side of crowd do like it, there is no middle ground. I guess they is try to hide, neutral might seem good and work but not always, in this case, they can't afford neutral as they knew they had to pick side, or suffer lost of customer.

Thing is Kingdom come first game don't had any optional for player to do gay thing, no one anger or mad at all, as far as I know (yes there is gay but it's for npc and it's very well hidden and very tiny small),

Now KCD 2, now more add optional for player to do gay thing, even although henry and hans capon was supposed to be brother in arm/platonic relationship, but romantic relationship optional between Henry and Hans Capon was very unthinkable and do not match background lore/history from old one, they written and now change mind and written something difference from original.

It's almost like superman Clark Kent is white guy from humble farming life family, they replaced person with black, and now it's black superman name Clark Kent, and that would rub some people in wrong way, I think people had no problem superman is black if use difference story, name and person, not replace original.

I think it's similar something to this, as people believe or strong believe henry and Han Capon are not gay or bisexual because it's not within their character on background lore.

IT's like Iron man bad guy, killing everyone while thanos is good guy stop iron man and save everyone, that would confused people and knew that it's not iron man and thanos's character, I guess that is why some people are not happy, if they allowed character customization and not playing as Henry, but different character, it's might be okay,

but it's rub people the wrong way when they did this. Same thing with the little mermaid,
old classic story was white women with red hair with fish or dolphins leg, now they replace classic story with color skin, same or similar story with same name, not a uniquely story/name but replaced something with same name with little change story yet similar story.

So I think that is why some people are not happy with it, even although it's optional but long time ago warhorse make clearly that Henry and Hans capon is straight, not bisexual or gay in first place, in old game, but other team within warhorse said or change mind, and making excuse calm to said it's not within budget, but that is not make sense at all.

Although, Warhorse was a independent till 2019, then there is parent company try influence over, and that is where they making excuse calm it's not within budget while before it's not because within budget, classic/original, that warhorse in 8 year ago make very cleary that Henry (I assumed same for Han capon as well) are straight, not only that, they want realistic setting along culture and law, (where know as "sodomy laws")
so it's make sense very rare person to be gay, very rare, so it's high chance Henry and Han capon wouldn't be gay as they seem as common men try to fight what they believe in, common men are not interest in gay or Sodomy, that is very rare/few men doing that, but not common men.

so all that together is why it's rub people in wrong way.

I think you can blame on investor because it's often investor seem as boss as they is one gave lot of money to company and company try to do what Investor said because of money, all come down to money, and personal believe that is investor, I guess in this world, one who are rich and had lot of money had personal believe or said influence over product more than many common poor people do, even many poor people disapprove over products but company don't care but care only for who paid them most, and that would be investor, not common poor people, I guess.

Because they knew people wouldn't want to buy the game if they put it in. But they also wanted the ESG money. So they put it in, and tried to hide it. So they could have their cake and eat it too.
