Can't seem to trigger the Horizontal Slice combo bug

I am doing the quest where the master Tomcat teaches you new combat techniques, but there is this one objective at the start, that requires you to attack him with the Horizontal Slice combo. I've been trying to do it for the last 10 minutes, even tried all sorts of combinations aside from the one literally written in the tutorial box top left, but no matter what I do I just can't trigger the combo.

Does anyone have any idea why that might happen?

what fixed it for me was changing my targeting so i click middle mouse and then it started doing the combo

gave up for now, but at least you gain some perks

Been stuck on this now for about an hour, just cannot do that slice action needed. I've tried M&K and controller

Edit: I just completed it but still not sure what I did but I just moved the right thumb stick around on the 3rd strike in different directions

i managed by switching to the xbox gamepad
not that it's straight forward either... i managed out of random tries

this new combat system is broken, the old one is so much easier

You hit top side then move mouse right and hit, you dont have to move the mouse left just keep it still after the second hit on the right. After the second hit the blade will auto hit from the left side. This is how i did it
