Seriously, it's this. I absolutely sucked at the combat in the first game, but this is far easier. You have less attack vectors (instead of the five directions and the scroll wheel thrust, you now have left, top and right, and the bottom is thrust). Also, if you find yourself facing the opposite direction when trying to swing your weapon then you either need to turn down your mouse sensitivity, or you need to adjust and make small, slight movements to whatever direction you want to swing. It's not broken, it's a skill issue.
If you wanna stay low level though maybe find some better gear. Basically twink yourself out. Hans might come off as a bear but if you figure it out then you'll realize he is more otter mode.

You then beat 'Hans' with your club.
Anyway, he is defeatable, begin with a parry+riposte then hammer him like 4 times, repeat as many times as needed. Frankly I hate the swords already, I'll be happy with Heavy Weapons.
