how much reference is there to it? Can I get away with finding a youtube summary of the story, or does this act as a standalone story and I don't need to worry?

I wouldn't normally be into this kind of game but some reviewers are saying its good because you can pretty much do whatever you want in it...I like that idea.

also...is there heaps of text to read, and dialogue "options" where you end up having to click on every option anyway to get all the info..I find that to be a drag.

Any comments around those points much appreciated. This is going to cost me a lot of kangaroo tokens so I'm trying to decide if its worth it.

Yes cause the first game is awesome.

No cause the first game is recapped via flashbacks and dialogue.

Conversations are likely to be like KCD1. Watch a Let's Play of that on youtube and you will see exactly how long the conversations are. There wasn't a huge amount of text to read.

Edit: From the dev streams they explained that you get the gist of the first game's story through events in the prologue (chats, dreams etc).
