I think it's more to do with you being a bit too simple-minded to hold coherent thoughts. I.E People probably just aren't happy to be talking to a person like you.
You can have player choice, without having character customization. It's not an all-or-nothing thing. Planescape: Torment has no character customization and is full of player agency.
Imagine if Final Fantasy 7 or Witcher did character customization? No Cloud or Geralt...
