It is possible, but not in the modern sense. There used to be huge problems with the fishing line. It was made mainly of hair and was braided. Also, the hooks were not made very simply either. Most often, fish were caught in other ways. Unfortunately, I do not know what they are called in English, but you can read about it by searching a little on the Internet.

The one thing that makes me think it won't be part of the game, is that Henry (still) can't swim. So the more we have to do around the lakes and rivers, the more that would be apparent.
Should it be? Perhaps. But I understand the need/want to keep it out of the game as it would add the need to work even more things into the game. I mean the terrain would need to be expanded on. They would need to add fully rendered fish and algae. I imagine that is also why we (more then likely) won't see actual birds we can shoot down (actually render birds into the game)
I dont know if there will be fishing rod, but on the Dev livestream they have mentined that you can kill fish with a bow, there are also crabs apparently
