Your friend sounds smart. It probably is for a GOTY attempt to appease the Reddit echo-chamber, because that entire event is bought and owned. BG3 did the same thing. Had a ton of inappropriate content and paid money to have Hogwarts completely blacklisted, even though Hogwarts was the highest grossing, played, hours, game that year. Didn't even get a mention lol. What a joke.
It is about the game of the year awards. To be nominated you need to put diversity in it. That means minority or/and gay presentation in a quest-chain.
That is why Wukong Black Myth was not nominated last year. You know only monkey with a staff. Well, you can argument that the black presentation was there, what do i know.
Now if there were a side character that was gay, and got caught and was on the run or received punishment, that would heavily deepen the lore and realism. Just making Henry gay with Hans is TikTok comment section dooker decisions.
Only a certain group of people decided to make a massive deal out of it. You should be asking them why is it so important to them.
I wouldn't be surprised if the gay side character, whoever they are, was in trouble for it. And that's the kind of story I'd be interested in, one that depicts the risks and ramifications of getting found out in the middle ages.
Plus of course, the antagonist (or one of them) is gay. I'll be surprised if they don't make that into something you can use against him, or at least something you can mock him for.
But if it concerned Henry and your playthrough was dependent on not getting caught and it having ramifications that's an infinitely more interesting premise of a romance knowing there would be grave consequences.
I would at least wait until the game releases before writing it off as a token gay relationship that's being handled just to appease people, there's also potential for it to be a legit well written story line, at the very least the stakes are much higher than with a traditional romance.
They are enslaved to investors and will do whatever the investors say.
