Do I need to play KCD 1?
If I have to, in order to truly respect the story I will but I hate the grindyness of the 1st so I never finished it.

No you don't have to play the first one. It can also be played as a standalone game

it does a camp scene at the beginning that goes over the story and choices you made in the first. So no, playing the first is not a necessity.
Yes if you want to know whats going on and why i strongly suggest you to finish KCD1 first!

I always loved the game overall but I also never finished as I had rage quit previously after frustrations with combat. But in an attempt to finish at least the main story before release I've thrown myself into KCD 1. If you keep at you'll pass a point where things feel better...I've got to that point and I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Anyway in answer to your question the answer is no. From what I've heard the intro will basically tell you the story of the first one and I believe it will even ask you questions about what you did in the first game to help develop your Henry. For those who haven't played or played the parts in question you will be able to answer those questions based on how you want to develop your Henry for KCD 2.

That said it sounds like KCD 2 is a refinement of many of the ideas of KCD 1 so my advice would be to start back in KCD 1 and get back into the swing of things. For me after not playing fort two years, the game was certainly more difficult to get back into then it was to learn initially (as it is so big and detailed) so if you do decide to play some more KCD 1 now you may want to just start from the beginning.

Would highly recommend it, probably not needed but as a direct continuation it will be like starting a movie/book at the halfway point.

If you want to a good understanding of the story and gameplay it would be a good idea to play it, but the lack of homosexual sex might upset you.

The way things are looking you will be better off playing the first game instead
