Whats the trick to making your sword swing in the way you actually told it too?

I cant figure out how to make it not random as if the game has a mind of its own..

I'll hold left press swing, then move right and swing again, and ti'll do another left swing..

Do a left swing, and it instead does a top down swing, then I try to switch to to a low jab/swing, and it'll do 2 more high swings, despite both previous swings the bottom of the star is red...

I'm convinced this is just broken... Unless I fight like I'm a guy who got dropped down a mindshaft as a child with a brain injury and take 9 years between each swing the game just doesn't register half of the buttons I press, or respect where the star red arrow is pointing for half the swings... Its like impossible to get a proper combo off.

Edit: I just want to point out too, I'm not just randomly spamming attack either. I'm trying to control my swings by lining the direction I want to swing, then pressing LMB.
