Observation: practicing marksmanship

After a full playthrough of KCD2 there does not seem to be any missions that really concentrate on the bow and using the sword all the time gets very easy. So, now on my second playthrough I've decided to try to git gud with bow and crossbows.

My observation is that practicing marksmanship with a bow at any old straw target seems to improve the skill only very slightly, if at all. However, if you practice at one of the 3 targets at the contest range at the base of Trosky castle the skill improves noticeably.

Anyone else notice something like this?

Do the archery contests. Each win nets you a full level of marksmanship, for a while at least. Start with beginners till you get like 6 or 7 then go intermediate for a bit. At 9 i was able to win some of the expert ones but it was still not trivially easy. Probably easier once you hit 12 or so.

It also scales with how far away you are, I was getting tons of XP just shooting stolen bolts at the Trosky shooting range from up the hill a bit, then collecting them again afterward. It seemed significantly faster than doing the actual shooting range. But I waited too long and people saw me using their bolts and arrested me... This still seems to be the best way to get xp for marksman, but you can also do the contest if you want a little free money as well. Don't forget your Henry's Fox potion!
