It IS a bit cumbersome, but noone has done it better so far.
Just keep in mind how simplistic basically every other game with melee combat has done it so far..., in KCD you have actual parries depending on weapon position, its no small feat but it of course needs an interface for the player to make inputs, thats what makes it a bit flunky, but it mostly works fine i think.
Git gud.
I just which you wouldn't have to rely on masterstrike that much.
it can be frustrating, if you don't have the combos unlocked or the master strike.
i felt the same.
Just talk to tomcat,
after he tought me masterstrike, combat was easy as eating pie vs bandits.
vs the knights and other guys you meet later it is still as challenging as vs the first bandits right after the prolog.
Give it a try - i bet you'll be surprised how well it works if you manage to get past the first 1 or 2 hours.
I was SO frustrated in KCD 1 until I took some serious time to learn the combat and then (while still occasionally f***ing up) it became one of the most rewarding combat experiences I've had in a game.. And as Henry builds skill levels you can feel the difference they make. Honestly if you're open to input just go into it knowing its gunna challenge you and try to embrace it instead of letting it frustrate you, once you start to get it you just feel more and more powerful and it's pretty great.
i started using high posion for the weapons and it made Life so much easier
KCD1's combat never completely clicked with me, but I got well enuf even though I'd never say I got gud. It was an enjoyable experience to feel a challenge all the way through the game (though I read about master strikes cheesing after I was done playing).
It is not hard and I rarely loose, so it is not all. I know the counters and combos.
It is just literally the worst combat system I have seen in gaming.
And you know what? Not important! Really enjoying the game. A new favorite. Too early to tell, but maybe GOTY material.
But I enjoj the game despite the horrendous combat. And let's face it: the controls barely work. The game is constantly switching targets, disengaging, trying to brush past enemies, stealth take downs barely work, everything is clunky and amateur ish. Mouse is nearly unusable in combat VS multiple opponents.
