Beautiful game but god is the combat terrible.
Many small issues in the game that on their own you can look past to enjoy the story.
Main gripe is the combat. Not even the locked in target version I mean straight attacking something freely is still bad. I have had more times than not completely attacked through a person just standing there. Or sneak up behind someone and point blank shoot them with a hand cannon just to have them stand up wondering what happened. After all that good luck getting your weapon out in time to fight.

Just too sticky, cumbersome and contextualized to be fun.

Did you watch the making of this game on youtube? Lots of content to be had. This game uses lots of motion capture and sword masters fighting comes into play.

Back in the jurassic park days could you imagine fighting the dude in red? yikes

system is a bit wonky, but they wanted a system where the opponents actually interacted with each other beyond simple hit and block as in almost every other game that features melee combat.

It IS a bit cumbersome, but noone has done it better so far.

Just keep in mind how simplistic basically every other game with melee combat has done it so far..., in KCD you have actual parries depending on weapon position, its no small feat but it of course needs an interface for the player to make inputs, thats what makes it a bit flunky, but it mostly works fine i think.
Feeling the same. The game is beautifully made and really breathes the right atmosphere but I really struggle with the combat as well.

KCD2, as KCD1 was, is not dodgeroller Dark Souls.

It's just different from what you're used to and that's a good thing. I love the combat in this game.
It's janky but it is not that terrible. Which game does have good medieval melee combat in comparism?
I just which you wouldn't have to rely on masterstrike that much.

Combat is fine in this game
it can be frustrating, if you don't have the combos unlocked or the master strike.
i felt the same.

Just talk to tomcat,
after he tought me masterstrike, combat was easy as eating pie vs bandits.
vs the knights and other guys you meet later it is still as challenging as vs the first bandits right after the prolog.

Give it a try - i bet you'll be surprised how well it works if you manage to get past the first 1 or 2 hours.

What this person said ^
I was SO frustrated in KCD 1 until I took some serious time to learn the combat and then (while still occasionally f***ing up) it became one of the most rewarding combat experiences I've had in a game.. And as Henry builds skill levels you can feel the difference they make. Honestly if you're open to input just go into it knowing its gunna challenge you and try to embrace it instead of letting it frustrate you, once you start to get it you just feel more and more powerful and it's pretty great.

Its still bugged .. the dam lock do not let go of dead enemies :) but there is a fix ...

i started using high posion for the weapons and it made Life so much easier
Yes the combat requires more than just leftclicking your mouse. I see how that is a problem for many people.

OP's allowed an opinion. Not every gameplay is going to mesh with everyone.

KCD1's combat never completely clicked with me, but I got well enuf even though I'd never say I got gud. It was an enjoyable experience to feel a challenge all the way through the game (though I read about master strikes cheesing after I was done playing).

My biggest issue with the combat is that attacks can pass trough targets like trough ghosts if the targeting thing is not properly locked. It happened to me countless times and its quite frustrating. Then after people are obviously dead, the lock on is stuck to them as they go down instead of instantly snapping to something else. Obviously I middle mouse click but still, it should not work that way.

Yeah, it is genuinely a -40/10 combat system. I haven't had a microsecond of fun during combat.

It is not hard and I rarely loose, so it is not all. I know the counters and combos.

It is just literally the worst combat system I have seen in gaming.

And you know what? Not important! Really enjoying the game. A new favorite. Too early to tell, but maybe GOTY material.

But I enjoj the game despite the horrendous combat. And let's face it: the controls barely work. The game is constantly switching targets, disengaging, trying to brush past enemies, stealth take downs barely work, everything is clunky and amateur ish. Mouse is nearly unusable in combat VS multiple opponents.
