Does the immersion get in the way of the fun?
From what i've seen if you want to save the game you need to make a potion that's single-use with ingredients that aren't that common, And some characs won't talk to you if you're dirty if i remember correctly and i'm sure there's a lot more of those life sim features.

How deep does all that stuff go? does it become overbearing where the game becomes a chore to-do list before you can do otther stuff?

I'm asking here because i dooubt steam's 2 hour refund window will give me enough to make an informed choice.

Nah it's quite rewarding and makes you think before you act.
In the end you have so many save potions anyway it doesn't really matter...apart from when you get drunk off them, then the good times begin!
That's a very subjective matter.

Overall the game itself has a slower pace unless you focus on the main story first and foremost, and personally I find the immersion doesn't get in the way of fun but can be punishing (like bleedings or having to stay clean etc).

A couple quests make really fun use of the drunk-condition tho.

ingredients for potions are fairly common, can also be bought from various peddlers, however, brewing potions is incredibly annoying mini game and takes me out of the game. i use 'save anywhere mod' and save regulary.

everthing else in the game is completely fine.

The potion can be bought from many vendors and is pretty cheap. Also it isn't the only way to save, you can save by sleeping in beds (that you are allowed to sleep in, such as paid for in an inn). There's also auto save points in quests and save on quit. Basically the point of the potions on save is to limit save scumming.

Very subjective :)
Comes down to what kind of gamer you are. I like a challenge and I have to use mods to get this from kcd2
I haven't felt any of it to be impeding. I got branded as a criminal for killing some guy in broad daylight and nobody would trade with me for a few days in game lol its a lot like older rpgs, with as much focus on side quests as the main quest, a lot of the side quests are very good and add a lot to the game, not just pointless fetch quests.

There are troughs all over the place to wash yourself in if you are too dirty.

I would recommend watching one of those before you buy videos, you are are right the 2 hours window isn't enough, there is A LOT of dialogue at the start of the game. You could most definitely find the first one on sites like Fanatical (which is 100% legit) for much cheaper, and I would say its just as good or better in terms of quests (in my opinion) and will give you a better idea of what to expect.

Saving by using potions has nothing to do with immersion, like if there's a potion in real-life that saves you from seath.
It's more like a mechanic to prevent poeple from abusing the save system, so you can't save before any pickpocket or lockpicking attempt and simply reload everytime.

And there's only a few moments where people don't talk to you because of your dirty clothes and they are quest related.
Usually they still talk to you, even if they say that you should wash yourself, so it will only lower your charisma stat.

Immersion can often be seen as tedious in a game, because in real-life things are more complicated, but I think this game series managed to find a proper balance between immersion and user-friendly gameplay.
A couple of options:

- Watch a YouTube Let's Play or Twitch stream of the game. Frankly it frustrates me that 95% of 'is this game for me?' posts would be solved if they did this. They aren't idiots, why won't they do easily accessible research over asking to be spoon-fed about a game being tailored to their tastes?
- Wait for KCD1 to go on sale and buy for US$5. KCD1 90% matches KCD2. If you like KCD1, you will like KCD2.
The ingredients for the save potion (Savior Schnapps) are actually pretty easy to find. I have over 100 nettle and belladonna sitting in my stash and making the potion takes 1 nettle and 2 belladonna. When you get the proper perks for Alchemy by leveling up the skill then you can make 6 of them at a time, and it takes a minute or two to make. Super easy to do and you can easily make an endless supply of them. Belladonna might be kind of hard to find at the beginning (probably the least numerous plant in the game), but once you find a spot for it or get your thievery skill leveled so you can steal from alchemy shops, then it is super easy to get your hands on.

I have yet to come across an NPC who would not talk to me because of being dirty. Being dirty can drastically reduce your charisma based on how dirty you are, but this is a non-issue later in the game. Overall I would consider the "realistic" simulation mechanics "light-simulation" mechanics overall. They do have an affect on how you might play the game, but they aren't that big of a deal to handle.

the belladona part is the pain in the a at start. do the KISS method, what i did for playing 1 day 1 and now part 2. keep it simple, Skalitz

potions= keep the 2-3 most important potion ingredients in your mind always or write it down. save schnapps, 25 health in one min. potions are best at start of game. you can always add in a couple kill/cook activities you like doing. ME i use honey from every village, pepas cabbage (if you find that your doing a lot of something, unlock perks that give you + stats from stuff you do a lot. my Henry's strength goes up just from picking flowers)

lockpicking= save a bunch and DO NOT use them at start of game. wait until you could spend 10-15. then pick a place at night, use and most likely fail...repeat.....after a while medium locks are a breeze and making bank $

hate the combat and exploring/questing/mini games= ignore everything i just wrote

No, the immersion is why it's so much fun. The spoon feeding from nearly every other RPG has become tiring, boring and insulting and it's great to find one which offers a much deeper experience.

You know what's great though? You don't need to do any of the simulation style activities if you don't want to.
There is enough camps (roadside) and other beds to save at, anytime I went by a camp I slept for 1 hour for the free save. Plus schnaps are everywhere if you are a good thief.
alka Feb 22 @ 6:45am
Level up alchemy skill and make cash with Chamomile potions (easy ingredients). Pick the perks for multiple potions as you level up.

Go get the Belladonna stash at Nameless Spring and make 120 Saviour Schnapps.

Save game like a lunatic.

edit. If you can't find Belladonna, it's sold by lots of NPCs. Save-gaming with Saviour Schnapps is only hard if you want it to be.

edit 2. Staying clean is not difficult either. Go to the baths, at worst use the water barrels.

Dude just get a mod off nexus for the saving thing. Lets you save scum in combat if you want to sidestep the hardcore element of the game
I buy every available Savior Schnaps in every location I visit, no need to brew it, frankly alchemy is just annoying anyway :) Got it to around 20 just by getting questrewards/books/Trainers
