Stuck in "for whom the bell tolls"

in the mission for whom the bell tolls, what to do once I managed to get the recipe book? I can't make the tonic since I don't have the ingredients or anything to pick the chest
I've been stuck on it for two hours I'm fed up

You can get lockpicks from the man you deliver the finished horseshoe to or by smithing with the right perk.

If the scribe is still there, knock him out, take his keys and loot his chest. the potion is in there too

How did you manage to being wanted?
Have you been where you shouldn't be?

Talk and convince them to let you go or reload an save from before and note that you have several approaches to do this quest and not all involve sneaking.
You can also help people and they let you go to certain areas of the castle for this and a stone throw to distact guards at the stairs also work.

I have no choice but to sneak, and the horseshoe guy has no lockpick for me. No way for me to get the tonic. Is this a game bug?

I'll be honest, it might be worth it to just restart the mission entirely since you're in a bad situation. Here's the reddit post I relied on when I got really stuck like you. I was stuck without lockpicks during mine so I had to get another way. The mission sucks imo

There's several places you can steal lockpick from I forgot where was it or with the right perks you can get some when you're making horseshoe for blacksmith osina. After that's done u can either make the tonic or just go to the room across the alchemy lab open those 2 chest and 1 of em should have fever tonic and digestive potion

The easiest way to complete this mission is to
-Carry the sacks to get access to the smith, talk to the smith to get access to the forge
-Next to the forge is a red jar with lockpicks, grab them and talk to the cook to get access to the kitchen
-Unlock the chest for the cook then steal the ingredients after you talk to her
-Talk to the chamberlain in the kitchen to get access to the alchemy bench
-Make the digestive potion for the chamberlain and fever tonic for captain thomas
-Give the potion to the chamberlain to get access to thomas

First of all you'll get 3 lockpicks a bit later and you're also given a task to forge a horseshoe. If you got Loscksmith perk in Craftsmanship spec - you'll get extra lockpicks before you'll get those 3. And yes, it's stealth mission, if you ignored stealth and thievery completely before - you're screwed.

No, easiest way is to climb down the well, talk to Hans. Walk over to opposite tower to steal a Fever Tonic from the scribes' room. Walk back to opposite tower and sneak up to Captain Thomas.

This was hands down the most frustrating quest I did, I stealthed my way up the left tower, then up the right tower, and had no lock picks so I had to go back down and grab one then run back up, and unlock the chest to get the herbs to make a potion. it was a frustrating mission I don't think games not built for good stealth should have forced stealth missions like this. if you can't do it right don't do it at all or at least don't force players to engage in it to progress.

Not to sound like a douche but I'm wondering why you posted here to ask. There are guides out there for this if you google it. Unfortunately for this quest there is a certain order you have to do things, and evidently that's the only way.

People are saying it's a stealth mission and it really isn't if you do it in the right order. I don't think I did anything stealthy besides stealing a lockpick from the shelves at the blacksmith. That was super easy though.
