Handsome Charlie ruins reputation?
Killed the man, as the quest said, and I went from a perfect 100 reputation in every region to -22 with the charcoal burners and 60-70 with everyone else. I didnt notice for a few hours too. Am I just screwed and have to reload a save from 3 or so hours ago or can I somehow fix this? Supposedly everyone hates the man so idk why they hate me for removing them

Decided to go back in time. Gonna have to redo all the fist fights to remake my progress. But it seems the only way to avoid the reputation loss is to lead Charlie out of the camp during the duel and kill him with no witnesses. My charcoal burner reputation went right back to 100 after my 5th attempt when I did that

If you run into reputation issues again here is a mod you can do which has multiple options for easier or harder reputation gains and well as options for no negative reputation:

Easier or Harder Reputation (PTF)

I pulled him by drawing my sword while he was standing on the edge facing east of the camp, then he decided to follow me into the woods a decent distance. There I killed Mr. Handsome and got no reputation loss. Worked for me, atleast. Give it a try!

Did you get him to agree to have a duel with you? When I did that all the other workers gathered around and watched the fight and I didn't suffer a reputation penalty after killing him.

You can pay into the indulgence (spelling?) box to fix some of your reputation. You can also go for a repentance trip if you talk to a priest, any, in second area. This should also improve your reputation by a far bit.

Edit:
On topic of the quest: This seems to be bugged as I have sneaked into the cap at night, killed the dude without anyone noticing me and I still lost reputation with charcoal burners.

Yes, I had done the first dialogue box that goads him into fighting saying something like “So they won’t realize you’re all hot air” or something. He agreed to the duel and demanded no one else interfere, but I was only able to avoid murder charged and severe reputation tanking by leading him outside the charcoal burner camp
It does seem like a bug. I got from 100 to -20 after killig Handsome Charlie. However, there is a workaround (credit to people who suggested luring him out of the camp).

Here's how it played out fo me.

I really wanted to defeat him in a duel, instead of simply assassinating him. So, I lured him just outside the fence by throwing rocks (had to be careful not to attract anyone else).
At this point I was going to reveal myself to him and try to lead him away from the camp. To may surprise, he took an issue with my horse standing nearby and tried to shoo her away. Good old Pebbles lead him away from his gang and to the edge of the "private area".

There I talked to Charlie and challenged him to a duel. Just to be on the safe side, during combat I backed off a bit to lead him even further from the camp.
One Master Srike later Mr. Handsome was no more, I had his hat and my Reputation was intact.

Hopefully this will work for others as well. Sorry for the long and conoluted tale :)

Edit: just don't go back to that camp later. If they see you there will be Rep loss (slightly smaller, mine went down to 58 insted of previous -20)
