“I returned to the hermit, but the situation had unexpectedly changed.”
The last entries in my journal for the Hermit quest are:

“Thanks to me, Ambrose finally forgave the old widow for his brother’s death.

I returned to the hermit, but the situation had unexpectedly changed.”

Indeed, when I return to the hermit, he’s not at his hut- he’s completely disappeared. I have a new quest marker at his hut telling me “Find another clue”, but there are no clues at his shack and there is nothing to interact with. Did I take too long getting back? I did do other things after burying Ambrose’s brother in the graveyard. I can only find one other reference online to this issue and no one responded to the dude.

Yeah, I guess you waited for too long. He's gone. Find another clue.

There are some sacks that can be moved to another place, and beneath those sacks exists another clue. I want to say it's to the back left of his hut from the entrance if memory serves.

Completely random fact that most people miss did you know that if you hand the widow the cross when shes a good distance away from the graveyard you get some backstory on her and the hermit as long as you walk with her and not fast travel? Its something I missed on my first play through but a nice treat on my second.

I did see those moveable sacks but dismissed it as irrelevant. Thanks!

This game is awesome. So many cool incidental details.
