If that never happens, kill him and find his diary hidden under sacks upstairs then read that diary.
I don't think there is a bug, he is hostile for a reason and I don't think he can become nonhostile if you stople something from him.
Yep I had a similar issue but I ended up killing him but followed all the clues and still found the sword.
His aggro status can be very finicky. Pretty much after talking with the inquisitors outside his ravine, you need to be VERY CAUTIOUS. When you first enter the ravine and he yells at you to stop and leave. Stop immediately and don't move at all. You will now have the option to talk with him and tell him that you aren't his enemy. He will then say okay and tell you to approach but you have to wait for his dialogue to completely end(He says a Latin prayer or something of the sort) or he will aggro on you.
I spent the rest of the game wearing the stuff I looted from those inquisitors. The shield, waffenrock and hood let you be the Dark Crusader.
