Question about variability of the last part of Dragon bones quest. Spoilers!
Ok, when I did this quest, I basically did this. I opened the quest by talking to the monk in Bylany. I didn't continue the quest from that moment until I was ready. After I talked to the Sedlec's abbot and later with the Gerhard, I immediately go to the Bylany, I didn't escalate the fight with Leopold and his bodyguards, the "lumberguy" was beaten up, when I arrived.

I rushed for the bones, some soldiers on the same path attacked me, I killed them, then when I found the bones, I had to deal with Leopold and his bodyguards. I didn't find Gerhard's men.

I saw somewhere, that the last part of this quest can end in 1 vs 1 vs 1 "mexican standoff, me vs Leopold and his bodyguards vs some knights.

So I am curious, how do you get this variation of this last part of this quest?

no idea... I followed the instructions to the location where the bones should be. There were no bones, the quest failed and I have no idea what went wrong...
Sometimes I think the "variations" in quests are nothing more than the result of bugs.

Yeah I literally had to redo this quest several times to get the bones. Finally I figured out that after you talk yo the guy that is sitting beside the Abbot you have to go immediately back to Monk Slava in Bylany, get the cutscene, then immediately follow the instructions to the location the lumber guy gives you. I ended up dividing the bones between us so I didn’t have to fight every one, and took the remaining ones back to the monk to finish the quest

I did the same thing, but only Leopold and his troops appeared. Did you kill some soldiers on the path to the bonus?

When I arrived there was nobody there, I dug out the bones, knights and Leopold have arrived, I ran away, quest completed.
You don't have to kill anyone in this quest, it seems you just were too slow
I slept first and then went to the spot in the morning...bones were gone. Then I reloaded to right after I talked to the lumberjack, ran to the spot (didn't bother following the instructions this time, since I knew right where it was) and once I dug them up, got the cutscene with all three of them. Then I killed em all. MY BONES.

You can use speech or intimidation to divide the bones equally, no one dies.

I avoided the soldiers on the way, but after digging the bones up I had to deal with two groups with 3 men each.
I tried to handle this situation with my 30 points in intimidation, but that didn't work and I also don't want to share the bones, so I reloaded and killed them all.

I went back to the monk, gave him just the half of it and pickpocket the rest afterwards and now I have dragonbones (likely dinosaur bones) in my chest.
This quest is stupid though, I went there, no bones, I saw Leopold's bodyguards walking out the map so I thought let's go back on the road to see if Leopold is there, well well he's on the road walking back to Bylany, so I drink a good old Saviour and kill him, guess what? he had no bones on him, aren't we both the only ones who know about these bones? lol

I hate fake quests like this.

No, there's another group of knights. Which is a sort of a reference to the Order of the Dragon btw.

Well it might be bugged nevertheless.

I divided the bones. Then as the two other groups walked off I shot them in the back with Henry Bane arrows. Watched them all die trying to get back to attack me, then took all the bones back from them.
