The game has full controller support so disable Steam Input for the game. Maybe that resolves it.
Had some really funky experiences in this regard with the Yakuza series to the point where the game lagged like hill unless I unplugged the controller before starting the game. Had to start the game until the title screen, plug it back in and it worked just fine :D
It still worked just fine on KCD1. I discovered that going to the controller settings for KCD2 and disabling Steam Input fixed the issue.
Occasionally Steam Input fixes stuff, and occasionally it screws everything up. It's a wee bit wild really :D
Suddenly X was O, Triangle was Square, etc.
I don't know if this is the source of other issues, or the combat training is also just buggy. Sometimes clicking the triggers just doesn't swing the sword.
(For clarity, controller works for all other games, some with Steam Input, some without. It's only this game I've ever encountered a problem.)
