are istvan and erik 100% gay, or is there room for interpretation?
at first i thought maybe istvan is erik's "father figure" or something. then during the duel henry calls erik istvan's "lover", but maybe it was just to provoke him?

Yes, they are. There was too much said about that in KCD1, including Jindro's words, and if Bailiff of Prbslavytsa got the idea, it's obvious - Jindřich is not the sharpest tool in the armory after all.
It was proven by a hint in KCD2, also, so they were not retconned.

No, Istvan and Eric are not confirmed gay - it's only implied by principle characters in order to mock them as sodomites. It's far more likely their relationship is entirely platonic and father/son'ish. KCD2's intent was to show the parallel between Markvart and Henry - and then Henry and Eric.

Yeah, that's why in KCD2 Ishtvan said "men like us" to him, and von Markvart made a great pause before saying "as father to him". They obviously love asses of each other.

It's also weirder as culture then wasn't exactly the same then as now. Have to factor class into the whole thing as well, as the rules didn't necessarily apply across the board.
Marriage is the obvious example, as when one set marries for property, how does that translate to those who have none, and cannot?
There was a lot more emphasis of "saving face" as well. You'll notice the looks NPCs share, and even some behind the back comments, but no one ever openly challenges Erik or Istvan.
But yes indeed, these antagonists relationship was firmly established in the first game.

Everyone had at least some property in the Middle Ages) Even landless peasants owned their clothing) So yup, sometimes even peasant marriages were convinced.
There may have been even more gay characters in the game; but since i sneak up and assassinate them, guess i will never know.
