The real provenance of saviour schnapps is simple. In KCD1, the only way you could save of your own volition was by exiting the game. Players thought this was a Bad Idea, so the developer introduced the schnapps.
Regarding how to explain it to the denizens of your game: tell them it is divine intervention. It does after all freeze time, which would be universally acknowledged to be miraculous.
Yes, sorry, forgot about those. Don't blame me too much. Asking for a time out just before a battle so I could get a bath was just not possible. ;)
