Question regarding raising reputation

The situation: I have excellent reputation throughout the second map, except in Raborsch (which seems hardcoded) and amongst the guards in Kuttenberg (presumably because I cut down some bandits who had stolen from me in broad daylight).

Now, raising reputation with everyone is really easy especially in the late game; just distribute largesse.

However, how does reputation improve with guards? I don't see any way to target them specifically.

The only way I know is to give them a friendly response when they talk to you.
