On the other hand, KCD2 is written in a newcomer-friendly way, and it might be interesting experience to play it first, and only then go back to the prequel and see Henry's beginnings.
Still, I would more recommend playing the first game, first.
2. The devs actually made a "movie" of all cut screens that can be found on youtube. It do give a god idea about the story.
3. It is a great game, when you get the hang of it... for that reason you should play it.
And it is often on sales for next to nothing.
Absolutely YES, YES, YES, you should play the entire KCD1, beginning to end, BEFORE you start the next one.
I feel if you jump into the new one, you miss too much of the storyline, Lore, events, historical names, and relationships to just jump into the KCD2. Imagine jumping into a movie in the middle and having minimal info about what happened in the parts you missed. That just does not make for a good viewing experience.
For me, just like Skyrim (my other favourite game) it has a lot of side quests, on a large map. It has so much of the HISTORICAL basis and background for the Bohemian conflicts of that era, including monarchs conflicts within their own castles. I am no expert, but I get the feeling this game follows the historical events to the "T". I wouldnt put it past them using historical maps and documents to place that knowledge into this games COdexs to teach us about those days. This literally is a history lesson in a game with great dialog/story-lines, great animations, great cut scenes, plus all the KCD1 DLC's are a must have as well. Those side quests give you more perspective into other peoples experiences and a layer that is unmatched in other games. The developers deserve much credit for their attention to detail of that era. Armour, weapons, building construction, tools of the day, jobs of the day, speech of the day. I am amazed on the detail they get into to make this game great. I cannot recommend this game enough, but please, play the first one before this one so you can get the great feel of the games intent beyond it being just a Bohemian era game. I hope this clears things up. Happy Gaming!!
As an example, if Theresa makes a return in the second game, it may confuse new players as to why she is so friendly towards Henry. She might also reference particular events in the first game, including from the dlc that was specifically about her.
Ultimately, it would depend on how bothered a player is about being seemingly left out of the loop with regard to the lore.
