I think that you can finish it before KCD2 get's released.
Start is a bit hard for new players, but once you learn the basics, the game get's really fun.
It's a proper RPG. You start as a weak lad that can barely hold a sword and you are a proper knight at the end of the game.
Lore and story wise you will learn about Henry's (protagonist) family and how a simple peasant managed to become a knight (which was rare back in the day).
Reading some basic history about 1400s Bohemia helps too.
You should though as it's a great game. and even if they've written it so it catches you up it's obviously better to play/see it in full.
As usual you don't strictly need to play the first game but the story continues directly from KCD1.
Originally the game was meant to come out in 3 Acts but the support was great so the first game got two acts, so this is still the same story.
I would also recommend to play KCD1 since it's a good game. Best tip I can give you is "Train hard, fight easy". And I really mean it.
Unfortunately you just missed your best opportunity to get the game for next to nothing since the sale on Steam just ended.
You can still get the whole lot for 8€ on GoG or 4€ if you know where to look.
Your playthrough will be more immersive and you will also be able to catch references to the first game.
Also some KCD1 characters will be present in KCD2 so when you met them, good old "welcome old friend" will not be as impacful to you if you never played the first game.
Anyone remembers playing Mass Effect 2 for the first time after playing Mass Effect 1 and meeting old buddy Garrus once again? (great scene btw.).
