Should I play the first game?
Do I need to play the first game before playing KCD 2?

Lore wise?

Yes. It's a direct sequel. And KCD1 is a very good game.
I think that you can finish it before KCD2 get's released.
Start is a bit hard for new players, but once you learn the basics, the game get's really fun.
It's a proper RPG. You start as a weak lad that can barely hold a sword and you are a proper knight at the end of the game.

Lore and story wise you will learn about Henry's (protagonist) family and how a simple peasant managed to become a knight (which was rare back in the day).

Reading some basic history about 1400s Bohemia helps too.

Don't need to.

You should though as it's a great game. and even if they've written it so it catches you up it's obviously better to play/see it in full.
Even though KCD2 catches you up story wise, I 100% recommend playing the first game. It’s my favorite game ever

I can only reiterate what others have said.
As usual you don't strictly need to play the first game but the story continues directly from KCD1.
Originally the game was meant to come out in 3 Acts but the support was great so the first game got two acts, so this is still the same story.

I would also recommend to play KCD1 since it's a good game. Best tip I can give you is "Train hard, fight easy". And I really mean it.

Unfortunately you just missed your best opportunity to get the game for next to nothing since the sale on Steam just ended.
You can still get the whole lot for 8€ on GoG or 4€ if you know where to look.

As the others have said, the first one is a GREAT game. Playing that will also get your skills up so that when you play this 2nd game youll be a pro. Timing should be good too, and you probably will be able to play the two within a month or so of each other.

It's a great time to play the first. Everything will be fresh in your mind and you will have a good idea of how things work, so KCD2 will not pose any problems for you.

It's not really it though is it? It's living life as Henry. Getting to know his quirks and funny ways, from a kid to a man. Personally I think this is important for when you take over Henry again. Yes, you most certainly can give the first one a miss, but I think you might regret it in the long run.

But personally experiencing events that happened in KCD1 will make you more attached to Henry, his friends (like Hans) and the world of 1400s Bohemia.

Your playthrough will be more immersive and you will also be able to catch references to the first game.

Also some KCD1 characters will be present in KCD2 so when you met them, good old "welcome old friend" will not be as impacful to you if you never played the first game.

Anyone remembers playing Mass Effect 2 for the first time after playing Mass Effect 1 and meeting old buddy Garrus once again? (great scene btw.).

You don't have to but it would be good imo. It's a bit like witcher 3 : you don't need to have played the witcher 2 or witcher 1 but if you did then you'll understand some story details better. If you don't play KCD1 you shouldn't be lost, the devs said they made sure new players can understand the story without playing the first game.
you don't need to play the 1st one but I think you should. I think you'll appreciate KCD:2 more if you play the 1st one.
Most likely if you want to make sense of Henry's flashbacks, his relationships and motives but ofc can just play the sequel and be left with some holes in the overall story.
Play bit of KCD 1 but KCD 2 is so much more so will start KCD 2
