Best tip I have is yes get whatever high Charisma gear you can early (there are alternatives to paying for it), make one of your 3 outfits a Charisma outfit and take the Nobility conversation option until your other skills are leveled. Don't start conversations (or trading) unless you're wearing your Charisma outfit UNLESS it seems like the conversation could lead to combat.
There is a Scholarship perk which allows you to see the difficulty of the skill checks for the various options. I found it very very useful and after I got it I started passing 95% of my skill checks because I could match my higher skills to easier difficulties.
Another option like mentioned above is to have multiple sets of clothes/armor, but I found that tedious and it took me a while to get my horse back so I didnt have the carry capacity to make that viable. Its really neat how there are so many different options to every situation.
This is a must have perk if you want to pass skill checks in conversations. Sometimes it's not so obvious where you need lower stats to pass skill check. And yes, find better clothes and accessories with high charisma and use Lion perfume
High charisma helps a lot with dialogue checks. You can raise that with clothing, and perks. For example, your dog can provide +2, another one gives you +2 when you carry flowers. Other statistics such as "scholar" or "survival" will help too. Do side-quests before going into the main story, that will ensure your success.
