I deleted that line, reloaded the save and found that, instead of standing in an unresponsive T-pose in the air like the barbers, Voyta's standing in a responsive T-pose on the ground and even greets me when I come close.
Once I go into the shield-painting menu though, it's just like going into the options menu at the barbers: completely unresponsive. I'm so glad that I pre-ordered this dog-water game. The DLCs are definitely worth it.
