Same, I gave him a shield, he took it and thats it lol. When I go to ask him to paint my shield again he just asks me to give him a shield then ends the dialogue

I saw that some mods have problems with this new painting system. Quicksave mod for example. So i suggest to check your mods to find solution, because some people, myself included, don't have any problems.

Easy; Get rid of all mods for a test, save and load and check. If it's still broken: return and complain.
