Since the first one was open-world in the same vein as games like Skyrim and Fallout 4 are, I would expect KCD2 to be the same.

KCD is not comparable to Skyrim and Fallout 4, KCD is so much better of a game in every way

I think "better or not" wasnt even in question.
How would you describe it to someone who has not yet played KCD1?

The comparison was made on just one aspect of the games, not the whole game. Individual similar features (like how the world is laid out between free-roam games) can be compared.

How open world is it? I suspect it will be like KCD. It's comparable to TES5 and FO4 in that you can go anywhere you can see with an invisible wall boundary at the map edges, but there are some differences such as fast-travel having interruptions though still bypassing side content otherwise. There are no transitions from exterior to interiors that I can recall which differs from all Creation Engine games.

The same type of open world, within the confines of the area created you can go anywhere.

It's a good comparison if you are simply judging based on the open world structure of the game. Obviously KCD is a considerably better RPG and game as a whole compared to Slopthesda's usual slop. But the open world aspects have a lot of similarities in their design.

EDIT: Actually there is one major difference. There are no loading screen transitions when entering interiors.

Once out of the (fairly sizeable, story driven) tutorial you could go anywhere in the first KCD.

We know that the sequel has two maps, travelling to the second will be main story related but once you are there you are free to travel between them whenever you want. They've said that travelling between the two maps (they're around 80 miles apart in real life) is the only loading screen.

Philosophy and feel though I'd say they're closer to Red Dead Redemption than they are modern Bethesda. They're so confident in the fact that players will enjoy being in their worlds that they don't feel the need to jangle keys by giving you enemies to kill and question marks to clear every 30 paces.

If it answers what's you're asking, after the first few introduction quest you can freely travel the whole map up and down they way you like, visit forrests, towns, merchants, find side quests, points of interest and bandits around to fight and loot

KCD is definitely better in some aspects than Skyrim, the latter has is a large but shallow pool, whereas KCD is a smaller pond that is deeper. KCD did what Bethesda should have done imo after Morrowind. Instead, Beth dumbed down every mechanic and streamlined everything. It's certainly a lot more interesting in mid to late game. The quests are better all around and the combat, while a clunky mess, still makes every encounter interesting.

Open world, you traverse historical Czechland.
