Subs not working on either of the Episodes.
Regardless of whatever I do the subs do not work in either Episode 1 or 2, especially for Alyx, any fixes?

any errors in your console? maybe it cant find the needed files, should say so in the console log. Only fix would be to extract the needed files to their respective folders.

There are a ton of errors like this one: "Cannot figure out which search path sound\vo\episode_1\c17\ba_defendcitizens01.wav came from. Absolute path is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life 2" This comes alongside a bunch of different file links too. What would I need to do for this?

Providing you have the disc space to do it you can extract the contents of the different games .vpk files into their respective folders within the game. You'll need a tool like GCFScape to extract the files.

For EP1, using GCFScape, you open the ep1_pak_dir.vpk located in the ...\common\Half-Life 2\episodic\ folder. There are many .vpk files but the *_dir.vpk is what contains (actually accesses) the contents of the rest of the .vpks, so this is the one you open. Extract just the content you need or all of the content into your ...\common\Half-Life 2\episodic\ folder.

You can do the same for EP2 as well as HL2 and Synergy. Then all game content will be available to Synergy in an unpaked state.

The game (Synergy) should temporarily extract the needed content from the vpks when needed but this doesn't always work flawlessly. Manually extracting them ensures the files are available.

Personally I extract the Maps, Materials, Models, Scenes, Scripts & Sound folders from the vpks and place them within my Synergy folder where all of it's content is located, although it should work just as well extracting them into their own respective game folder. You may also need/want the other folders from the vpk: Expressions, Media, Particles & Resource

When/if extracting into the Synergy folder do not overwrite an existing file, you want the original Synergy version of the file.

Hope this helps.

I extracted the folders I needed in the *_dir.vpks from Episodes 1, 2 and synergy back into the synergy folder and I still had nothing. What's odd however is that major dialogue from characters like Alyx and Kleiner does not have subtitles while background dialogue from Rebel teammates would work and appear in subtitles. Also wanted to note that although that HL2 actually had fully working subtitles in synergy I extracted the HL2 folders anyway and they broke Alyx's scripts making her unable to move or speak, even when paired with all the other extracted folders.

Possibly extracting hl2 after synergy allowed it to overwrite some files without warnimg.
To make sure all the original Synergy files are intact you can re-extract the Synergy files, overwriting any from hl2 or the episodes.

I guess it would be best to extract the files in order of release, that way any duplicates should be replaced with the latest version. So, in future, extract in this order: hl2, ep1, ep2 then Synergy.

Beyond this I am not sure what you can do to fix the issue but if i come across one I'll post it here. Verifying the files is another option, could be corrupt/missing files in any of the games.

If you want to revert your Synergy install back to original just delete the main Synergy folder and then use the verify files tool to reaquire it.

Found a fix, copy closecaption_language.txt and closecaption_language.dat from the resource folder (\Half-Life 2\ep2 or episodic\resource) into Synergy's resource folder. You might be able to combine the files to get both ep1 and ep2 subtitles at the same time, but I haven't tried it.
