It doesn't really matter if you don't want to or not. You have to port forward if you intend on hosting and playing co-op with your brother in an old source game.
There might be servers being hosted publicly on the server browser; if you refuse to port forward, you guys could potentially join the same server together.
Edit: You will need a console to connect and then use the command "connect Hamachi-IP"
Its possible that your friend will run into this message which is saying something like this
"lan server are restricted (type c)"
If its the case you can do the "sv_lan 0" command and then "changelevel map_name"
the sv_lan 0 only gets activated after the server changed level.
2.Edit:
And i highly recommend using a dedicated Server cus the game is old and tends to crash from time to time so the whole server doesnt crash if the hosts game crashes
Another important note
This game doesnt save at all. If you stop at some point and you wanna continue playing later. Press TAB and look at the top right there you should see the map name. Rememeber it and use the changelevel command if you want to continue from that level.
Overall "noclip" and "changelevel" command are needed sometimes when the game breaks so better keep them in mind.
For Noclip "sv_cheats 1" needs to be turned on.
Impulse 101 (It gives you all the weapons ingame)
can also be helpful if a certain weapon is needed and you somehow lost it
(a few textures are still missing tho).
It takes a few seconds for the LAN server to show up.
Interesting; I wonder if Valve made mods and stuff on Steam go through the Steam Servers, now? That would be absolutely fantastic if they pulled that off
Man I really hope they pulled it off somehow, maybe updated the multiplayer component or whatever they call it in steam.
Apparently, Synergy specifically is planning on integrating Steam Integration for the next update!
