How to use appliances?

I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to use appliances that come in the boxes when people give them to you. I've tried everything to open them or use them but I keep storing them in my shed until I figure it out. I have a rice cooker from Hina and a camping stove from Gabe but no clue how to access them or what to do because it doesn't explain it in the tutorial or mention it anywhere that I can find.
