You probably don't live at the same lat/long as the location:

even me, 4 degrees south, experiences a fairly similar cycle, just interrupted by DST (nearest large city for comparison):

i.e it's for realism.
I'm in Oregon so not that much more south than you and grew up in WA. It does not get dark at 3pm in spring, excluding like if there is a storm. I get what they are going for but they did it poorly. You may also have a brighter screen. I didn't notice any brightness settings in game, but maybe I missed it. But it may not seem as bad on some screens that are brighter.
I don't think the game settings changes the sunset time, though I did stretch days out to 30 minutes which you can do anytime you want while the game is running.
I understand the intent but it gets super dark long before when sunset would be even in that region. There doesn't seem to be a brightness slider in game so that may be part of the issue. I don't know why that was left out of the settings.
Im not sure too, could always post a suggestion to the discord server for it to be added?
I meant default calendar season.
