Mass Effect (2007)

If you are having trouble making Mass Effect 1 (ME 1) to run.
First of
Tested on Windows 8 64bit - Me
Tested on Windows 7 64bit - gopher65

Most users will mention that it's just a matter of setting the ME executable's compatibility mode to Windows XP SP3, although they may be right, depending on your case of course, I've noticed that most of the times they don't specify the executable's location or don't do it right when they do specify it. So here is my 5 cents.

Go to your ME's folder folder:

(hard drive*):\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Mass Effect

And now here is the catch, you'll find two possible executable files that would seem to be the ones you need do modify. Well, they are not. On the "Mass Effect" folder double click on the Binaries folder, here you'll find what you need.

Right click over MassEffect.exe > click on Properties > click on compatibility > change to Windows XP SP3 and select the "Run as Administrator" box. Click Ok. Do the same to "MassEffectConfig.exe" (just in case). Well that's it.

You may want to do the same to the executable files back on the Mass Effect folder if all fails, I hope it doesn't.

I wish you the best luck, it's a great game and I hope you enjoy it too =p

This worked for getting the game to launch (thanks, by the way) but I'm still having sound issues. I had absolutely no sound during my first launch of the game so I went back into the ME folder and made sure every .exe file was changed to "Windows XP SP3" and "Run as Administrator." I even did a complete PC restart. Game cache has already been verified. I got sound during second launch but lost it after about 5 minutes. Any ideas on what else I can do? I'm running Windows 7 64-bit. I've got 13 other games in my library and none of them have sound issues, so I'm not sure what's causing it.

Thanks, this worked for me on Win 7 64-bit:).

I'm still a bit unhappy that Steam published a game without issuing warnings or bothering to test compatibility, but at least there is a work-around.

I don't have anything related to "compatability" in my folder.. any idea on how else I would do it? I have Windows 8, 64 bit.

You should put the executables that are located inside your "Binaries" folder under compatibility mode not your folder.
