Mass Effect (2007)

Mass Effect (2007)

Using a Trilogy key on Steam...
Just getting around to the series, and I have acquired the Trilogy. Because this was a holiday related acquisition, it is a physical copy. I thought 3 games would come with 3 activation keys, but no, one code for all 3 games. And of course, that code does not appear to be compatible with Steam to get the first two games.

I am increasingly regretting all relevant decisions -.-

Am I screwed? Do I have to use Origin? Is there any possible means of getting ME 1 and 2 on Steam without purchasing them again?

I have low hopes, but who knows. Thanks!

Eh, sadly -- those keys are only redeemable by Bioware's website or EA's Origin. This is the sole reason I refrained from buying the trilogy, that and the missing DLC from Mass Effect 2. You would think the trilogy would have it all, right?

Well, you could always just install them all and then add them as a third party game to your Steam library list. That is if you don't mind that method.

You could launch it with steam, but Origin games disable the Steam Overlay. Kind of an insult to steam in the coding.

Last time I checked you can get around it and have both overlays. I can’t remember if you link the launcher to steam then launch the game once Origin is already running, or to auto launch Origin when you try to start the game. The only problem I had was, once the game was running, you need to restart steam to get it to stop thinking you are still playing the game. Hope this works for you like it did me.

The overlay works fine for me in my Origin games (Mass Effect 3 for example). I link to the game's exe and launch the game through Steam but you need to make sure Origin is not already running in the background when you launch the game. Origin will then launch, then launch the game and the Steam overlay should work for you.

In order to stop Steam from showing you as playing when you exit the game you also need to exit Origin afterwards.

Ah, I knew one of them worked. Last time I tried it, it still thought I was playing, even if I shut down Origin. Maybe they fixed that in a patch (Steam end I would presume). Good to know man. :)
