i put points into pistols untill i unlocked the sniper.

No, but it wouldn't be a waste. When using the Marksman skill (which can be kept up almost indefinitely), pistols have the highest DPS in the game.

thanks for the info!

Unless you really like both weapons, just invest as many points as possible into one of them (either Sniper from the start, or Pistol from where you're at now), and you'll just have to deal with that one weapon slot for gear.

I know that my Infiltrator will be unlocking Sniper Rifles then abandoning Pistols.

Pistols can have the highest DPS in the game. Their downside (at least until you become neigh invincible with Lv 60 gear) is that they're kinda medium-short range. With a Sniper Rifle, you can shoot from a distance. With an Assault Rifle, you don't have to worry as much about aiming. With a Shotgun, you can eventually just unload and I think shoot multiple enemies with your wide spray.

But in terms of outright DPS, a maxed out Pistol (skill and gear) with a maxed out Marksman turned on, is the best for that.

Ditto on the previous pistols comments. I just finished a play-through with an Infiltrator and found very few places where the Sniper Rifle was all that helpful. Most combat takes place at short to medium-range and the pistol will be infinitely more helpful in those situations. In most of the long-range situations, the Sniper Rifle was most useful for finishing off something that I wore down with the Mako, but that's a personal play style kind of thing. Sniper Rifles will be much more useful if you carry your save over to ME2 and ME3, but there won't be any need to pump points into it there.

Yeah Sniper has more limited use, but when it IS useful, it's quite useful. :)
Like yeah, sniping off enemies far in distance in Uncharted Worlds, or getting that enemy across the battlefield. If you're gonna use it, you better fully upgrade it.

Sniping is more useful in ME2 and kinda ME3.

Explosive ammo on sniper rifles is probably the most epic thing I have ever witnessed...

Equip a Spectre Master Gear rifle with level X explosive ammo on yourself, Garrus, and Ashley, and you are completely unstopable.

It also makes robo-Saren a pushover...

yeah, but is a 1 shot overheat tho
i usually use combat optics X, frictioless materias X (i can shoot unscoped, up to 8 continues shots without overheating)
and use sledge hammer rounds (50% force instead of 500% XD)

Who cares? You can kill almost everything in the room instantly.

as an infiltrator i auto leveled all the time, got an OP sniper and it never over heated after repeated shots

you need a heat sync item which you can find (i think its called that) recuces heat build up by ##%

well, i tested it and i have almost the same dps with the sledge hammer rounds, and can fire up to 8 times, and can change one of the frictionless materials for a dmg mod, so...
explosive has 500% force, that means it pushes mobs, not that it does 500% extra DMG
and since they almost always die in 1 shot, not worth the wait to shot the next dude.
i chose throw as a special talent, sledge hammer have chances of pushing enemies, and i have a balanced party (can disable shields or armor easy)
i beleive they are not worth the hassle

Meh, I still like it thought. Its just a cool thing to use.

between Tali and my infiltrator Saren was always a push over. we just kept his weapons overheated and he was never a threat. i never remember to use my grenades, that being said there were times i wish i had a different gun to handle close range combat - like a shotty or AR - however i just rolled a soldier and the AR seems 100% worthless. the accuracy is just horrible from the start so i think in the end pistal makes a better AR than the AR does. i will say with the AR's drasticallly better heat disapation i wonder what High Explosive rounds are like on it.
