kaidan or ashley?
i ALWAYS save ashley on virmire because for some odd reason i never really warmed up to kaidan. i'm redoing the trilogy and this time around im a lot more warmed up to kaidan for whatever reason. i still like ashley though. you can talk her out of her racist beliefs and make her a better person.

so who do you guys usually sacrifice on virmire? im a femshep who ALWAYS (and always will) romance Liara so theres no romance incentive for me.

as of now im leaning towards sacrificing kaidan again, but i really like how gung ho he is and how loyal he is to shepard right off the bat. ashley is too, but not really until mass effect 3.

Kaidan, because a plain Soldier is boring.

I sacrifce them both for the greater good.

I go Ashley simply because Kaiden has the same voice actor as Carth Onasi from Kotor. And that guy whined WAY too much.

i went ashley in the playthrough. no doubts

I just finished my 1st runthrough of ME1, and I left Ashley. Throughout, I just found her to be a bit obnoxious, I really did try to give her an equal chance to Kaidan by exploring both of their dialogue options and getting bits of their backstories, but made my choice long before I got to Virmire. What draws me to Kaidan more is that he's more reasonable and less passionate/hot-headed than Ash. He tends to look at a situation more analytically and objectively, and in that respect, he's a better squadmate to me.

I find Ashley's personality a little more likeable simply because she has a sense of humor, while Kaidan is all serious 95% of the time. That being said, I don't actually DISLIKE either one of them.

My decision who to save on Virmire is usually based entirely on which of them has the skillset that better complements Shepard in that play through.

In my first playthrough, Shepard was an engineer. That meant that Kaidan's tech abilities were redundant and his biotic abilities could be handled just as well, if not better, by Liara or Wrex. Furthermore, it became clear very early in the game that Kaidan had the durability of wet tissue paper. (He's better in ME3 in that respect) Ashley, on the other hand, had the skillset to make up for my lack of combat abilities and could actually stay alive longer than 20 seconds. Thus, Kaidan's honorable sacrifice on Virmire was an obvious matter of practicality.

In my second playthrough, Shepard was a soldier. That meant that Ashley's skillset was identical to my own. This time, Kaiden could handle the tech and biotic abilities that I lacked entirely and I could take some hits to keep him alive longer. From a squad standpoint, Ashley was effectively dead weight. As Javik might say, her sacrifice will be honored in the coming empire.

youre getting so many long explenations lol.... I'd say save kaiden because you haven't done it before. It might make the game seem a little more fresh with this spin. I also like kaiden. I've saved him in the past I enjoy having him as a character and a squadmate as well. In Mass Effect 3 it will gear you towards a romance with him (just a warnign since you are set in that part of your game).

it dosent, my femshep never romanced him period (liara permanentmance) and it just gives you an option to say he's a brother to you

Well I have to say that i never realy liked eather of them, so in my first playthrouth I saved Ash, in second Kadian, in third Ash and now I am going for fourth so I guess its Kadians turn again :)
My only choice for romance is Tali... also if it wasn't for Tali, whole galaxi would be pretty screwed up so she is the best :D

I always save Ashley if I go paragon, cuz if I rp it's the most logical thing to do. If you rp, I always send Kaidan with the bomb, cuz he's the tech specialist and so I trust him more with the bomb than Ashley. Then when I have to choose I always save the Salarian squad, which includes Ashley. When I went renegade I didn't care about the Salarians and saved Kaiden XD.
Don't like either one of them very much though, since Liara is always my go to romance and on their own they're kinda boring.

i don't pick favorites for that scene, i don't consider ashley or kaiden any more or less important to each other. so it's by random draw.

Always Ashley. I love her sarcastic comments and I think she's a much more interesting character (I enjoyed talking with her about her story, religion, literature). Always found Kaidan a bit uninteresting. I kinda feel bad for the guy, but what you gonna do. I also never choose Kaidan as a squadmate, thus he must die.

I chose Kaidan a few times in the past, until I had one Femshep playthrough where I talked a lot with all crew members. In that grounded scene, Kaidan then approached me and we suddenly started petting, and I wasn't given an option to say no, just three different ways of saying "take me". Apparently friendly chatter automatically means dating for Bioware. That pissed me off so much that I abandoned the playthrough and decided to always kill the bastard.

In my recent renegade playthrough I saved Ashley again, but killed her in ME3 instead of talking her out of it. I never liked her silly new looks, so she brought it on herself.

As for Ashley being racist, I think that's totally overblown internet rage. Yes, she doesn't like aliens, and I don't really like that, but I can see where she's coming from. The Turians killed her father in the war, and she's a very distrustful person with an "only rely on yourself" mindset. At first, I also dismissed her as racist, but when taking a closer look, I realised it's mainly distrust, not hatred or something. She doesn't insult aliens or sees them as inferior or something.

She also doesn't trust politicians and especially Udina even though he wants to give humanity more power. Cerberus is human supremacist but she hates them too. Speaking of which, who worked with Cerberus again? Hint: not Ashley.
