My decision who to save on Virmire is usually based entirely on which of them has the skillset that better complements Shepard in that play through.
In my first playthrough, Shepard was an engineer. That meant that Kaidan's tech abilities were redundant and his biotic abilities could be handled just as well, if not better, by Liara or Wrex. Furthermore, it became clear very early in the game that Kaidan had the durability of wet tissue paper. (He's better in ME3 in that respect) Ashley, on the other hand, had the skillset to make up for my lack of combat abilities and could actually stay alive longer than 20 seconds. Thus, Kaidan's honorable sacrifice on Virmire was an obvious matter of practicality.
In my second playthrough, Shepard was a soldier. That meant that Ashley's skillset was identical to my own. This time, Kaiden could handle the tech and biotic abilities that I lacked entirely and I could take some hits to keep him alive longer. From a squad standpoint, Ashley was effectively dead weight. As Javik might say, her sacrifice will be honored in the coming empire.
it dosent, my femshep never romanced him period (liara permanentmance) and it just gives you an option to say he's a brother to you
My only choice for romance is Tali... also if it wasn't for Tali, whole galaxi would be pretty screwed up so she is the best :D
Don't like either one of them very much though, since Liara is always my go to romance and on their own they're kinda boring.
I chose Kaidan a few times in the past, until I had one Femshep playthrough where I talked a lot with all crew members. In that grounded scene, Kaidan then approached me and we suddenly started petting, and I wasn't given an option to say no, just three different ways of saying "take me". Apparently friendly chatter automatically means dating for Bioware. That pissed me off so much that I abandoned the playthrough and decided to always kill the bastard.
In my recent renegade playthrough I saved Ashley again, but killed her in ME3 instead of talking her out of it. I never liked her silly new looks, so she brought it on herself.
She also doesn't trust politicians and especially Udina even though he wants to give humanity more power. Cerberus is human supremacist but she hates them too. Speaking of which, who worked with Cerberus again? Hint: not Ashley.
