Unintentional relationship with Kaidan?
I'm currently playing the Mass Effect series for the first time and I decided to romance Garrus, so I'm just trying to get to know my crew better and waiting for ME2 for the romance. However, it seems that, by chance, I entered some sort of relationship with Kaidan by (most of the time) neutral talk. Liara made a comment about that and I had no option to say I don't care for Kaidan in that way. Is it even possible to refuse him politely later?

Well you can't go back anyway,so I'd suggest you to wait.I think you should be able to refuse.You can romance Garrus in ME2 anyway :P

Yes, you will have an option later in the game (near to the end). He directly come to you for some talking (no spoil^^). At this moment, you can ask him to left... and it will be end your relationship.

Thank you both :) I'm quite relieved, Kaidan is an interesting character, but not my favorite romance option.

I had that happen wirh Liara. And Ashley at seperate times. I felt so bad for Liara because she thought there was some kind of mutual attraction between us, and the only way I could think of to get out was to say I liked Ashley (which was a lie). Sigh, the trials of waiting for Tali in ME2...

It should be noted that you can't romance Garrus in the first game and you are not restricted in your romance options in subsequent games.

You can skip having a romance in ME1, go for Garrus in ME2, and continue it into ME3.

This just reminds me how unseen the romancing aspect is in ME1. In my first run ever, aimed for Liara but all of a sudden discovered had romanced Ashley too, though it wasn't intention. Had just been polite to everyone on first time and it led to that confrontation.

Just in case it wasn't clearly defined.

In the first game you get:
- Kaiden (Fem Shep only)
- Ashley (Male Shep only)
or
- Liara (Any Shep)

In the second your options open up quite a bit more. To allow for some interesting relationships. Such as M.Shep and Tali, or Fem Shep and Garrus along with a few others.

In the third game ---> Spoilers to follow so don't read if you don't want to know <---

-Kaiden or Ashley return as a romancable option regardless of Sheps Gender, aka they suddenly decided to become bisexual.

- Garrus is back for Fem Shep
- Tali is back for Male Shep
- Steve the shuttle pilot (Male Shepard Only)
- Liara (Either shepard)
- Diana Allers (Either Shepard I think)

Most of the other options I forget...

All I can really say is... keep your saves, and always import to the next game. Makes the decision process WAY more rewarding.

ME1:
-Ashley (Male)
-Kaidan (Fem)
-Liara (Male/Fem)

~~~
ME2:
-Miranda (Male)
-Jacob (Fem)
-Jack (Male)
-Thane (Fem)
-Garrus (Male)
-Tali (Fem)
-Some slight flirtations, especially from characters carried over from ME1 main missions
-Kelly... somewhat (Male/Fem)
-Kaidan and Ashley can continue... somewhat
-Liara can continue... somewhat, but especially with the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC
~~~

ME3:
-Steve (Male)
-Samantha (Fem)
-Ashley, Kaidan, Liara can either start here, or continue from your ME1-ME2 run. Kaidan can now be romanced by Male.
-Diana (Male/Fem) is the Kelly of this game, not interfering with other romances nor counting as a 'real' one
-Miranda, Jacob, Jack, Thane, Garrus, Tali all carry over to various extents. They cannot begin in ME3, but must be carried over from ME2.
-Kelly carries over but does not really interfere with another one
-The flirtations with misc ME2 characters lead to nowhere

-Citadel DLC has romance content (or at least content that recognizes romance) for pretty much everyone. Ashley, Kaidan, Liara, Miranda, Jacob, Thane, Jack, Garrus, Tali, Steve, Samantha.
-There is also a recognition of something with Samara if you stuck out long enough to hope for it.
-James and SecretCharacter also have things but its much more of a joke with them.
-For the record, Leviathan DLC also acknowledges your locked in romance with a Normandy character (Ashley, Kaidan, Liara, Tali, Garrus, Steve?) if you involve them with it, but not much.
-Omega DLC tosses a bone towards Ariamancers if you do things right.

There are 11 'more full' romance plotlines in the series (of varying quality or intensity). 3 start in ME1 (but they are reintroduced in ME3 if you missed em). 6 start in ME2. 2 new samesex-only ones in ME3.

You got Garrus/Tali wrong. Garrus is for Fem, Tali for Male

Of course, you could always romance him and kill him.

Of course, you could do that with Garrus in ME2 as well.

Hmmm.

I think I'm liking the new Black Widow Shep I'm seeing.
