Lens flare bug

I haven't played this game in over a year. I finished the console versions ages ago, and just started ME1 again. Lens flares in this game are worse than a JJ Abrams movie! I don't remember them being this bad on the Xbox 360.

My problem is that whenever I go to zoom in on distant targets on the first level with the Beacon, a massive white lens flare blooms up at the center of the screen and then balloons outward, obscuring my targets along with 80% of my Field Of Vision. When I zoom back out or displace to a new position, it goes away, but as soon as I zoom in with any weapon whether a pistol, assault rifle, sniper rifle or even the shotgun, it'll flare up again.

Regular lens flares are bad enough, but this is ridiculous! Has anyone ever encountered this problem and is there anything that I can do about it aside from charging the enemy positions shooting from the hip and hoping that I nail them all before they take Shepard down?
