In ME2 everything "works" better, although for my taste it was a bit over-simplified there. It's all about cover combat there with very little variation. In ME1 you also have open spaces, freighters full of crates, close combat, long-range combat. Go too far to the edge of the cover and risk being hit. More realistic. There was different cover, some of it not good at all, which forced another approach.
Yes, it's a bit clunky, but also more "organic" (or less "digital") and varied, and I like that.
