Logitech F310 gamepad natively supported!
I have great news for anyone wanting to play with a gamepad. I am relatively new to modding and was a bit afraid to mess with the mod to enable support for X-input gamepads, and I also didn't want to install any further software, such as xpadder or Joy-to-key. I own several controllers, including the old but trusty Logitech F310 gamepad. I thought I would use the Logitech Profiler software and try to customize the gamepad support myself, but man, there are a lot of controls to configure.

I updated the Profiler software, set my F310 to D-input, plugged in my F310, fired up the Profiler, and to my pleasant surprise, a profile for Mass Effect was already created that recreated the Xbox 360 profile! I just had to remember to change the global settings on the Profiler appropriately, and the controller was recognized by the game!

Oh, I'm so happy! Lack of gamepad support was one reason why I held off purchasing this game for so long.

I'm having issues with my F310 - maybe you can advise - sometimes games think the D-pad is the left joystick (this happened mid-game in AC Odyssey) and using Big Picture mode doesn't help at all (won't save my settings).

Please try pressing the "mode" button on the gamepad. This swaps functionality of the dpad and left joystick. For me, the controller is working with the "mode" LED off. I hope this helps.

Yesterday, I switched the global profiler settings to, "Apply persistent profile" and selected "Mass Effect" and the game recognized the controller. I then switched the global profiler settings to, "Apply profiles to games automatically", and the game still recognized the controller. Today, I had to uninstall and reinstall the game because I'm learning to mod. I noticed that the game no longer recognized the controller, initially. Then, I switched the global profiler settings back to, "Apply persistent profile" and the game recognized the controller again. I would recommend keeping this setting while playing Mass Effect.

If you select "Hide profiler" in the settings, the right stick, which controls the cursor like a mouse, will drift left. Therefore, this setting should never be selected. The profiler should be kept open and running in the background unhidden. Of course, once the game is launched, the profiler is not visible.

Tonight, I'm noticing some odd behavior at startup. Sometimes, the game can be lauched directly from the profiler without incident. Today, I tried launching the game from the profiler and there was drift from the right joystick, and the dpad was unresponsive. I had the gamepad plugged into a port on the left side of my laptop. I did some experimenting. I unplugged the gamepad and plugged it into a port on the right side of my laptop, with the game running. This resolved all issues. I wanted to see if this was consistent. I plugged it back into the left side, it drifted, then I plugged it into the right side, and this time it drifted. I then plugged it into a different port on the right side, and it drifted slower, then after a few seconds it stopped drifting, and I'm playing the game fine with the gamepad plugged in this port. Strange. I suspect it is best to launch the profiler, keep it running in the background, then launch the game from Steam, not the profiler. It's disappointing that there are issues with the profiler.

Today, after plugging the F310 into the left side of the laptop, the left dpad and left stick both were drifting, however, the right stick was not. After simply using the right stick to hover over a selection in the main menu of the game, the drifting stopped. I keep testing and I'll figure this out, eventually and post a guide.

The F310 can actually control the mouse and mouse buttons on the Steam launch screen for the game, and can be used to launch the game from the Steam interface. Today, there was drifting of the right stick regardless of which port was used. It seems that the profiler window has to stay open, and not minimized. Today, keeping the profiler window open, then clicking off the window to show the Steam launcher page for Mass Effect, stopped the drifting.

Interestingly, I've discovered that the F310 can then be used essentially like "Controller Companion" within the Steam desktop app.

Sorry, guys, the F310 is getting buggier and buggier as far as being able to be recognized. Today, I had to reboot my laptop in order for the F310 to be recognized properly. It's got to be my system's fault. I figured out that the F310 when working properly is recognized as a mouse for the right stick and as a keyboard for the left stick. I notice that when the F310 is recognized properly, in the Windows 10 Settings system app, under the Bluetooth & other devices page, the F310 is listed as 3 items: under Mouse, keyboard, & pen the F310 is listed as "HID Keyboard Device" and "HID-compliant mouse"; and just below that, under Other devices, the F310 is listed a third time, as "Logitech Dual Action". When the F310 is not recognized at all the first two entries are absent. When the F310 works partially, with the right stick working but not the left, the HID-compliant mouse is there but the HID Keyboard Device is not.

My laptop is about 4 years old, and the F310 is over ten years old but works fine otherwise. Gotta be the laptop.

Today toggling the "mode" button made the left stick and dpad of the F310 be recognized properly.
