78% (current metacritic) isn't that bad, but very bad compared with ME(89%), ME2(94%) or ME3(89%). However, many review the story isn't that good while the gameplay got better. And Mass Effect is known for the great story.
So, i think 78% (current metacritic) is very bad since the story isn't that good and the games feel unpolished/unfinished by the reviewer.
I think they should postpone the game for a year to fix all problem rather publish unfinished/unpolished games.
EDIT/ I agree that it's bad if you measure it next to the Trilogy scores but after Mass Effect 3 I didn't expect them to make a new Mass Effect that'd be anywhere near as good as Mass Effect 1/2
Really is a shame about the apparent "downfall" of bioware games, DA:I was a bit of a let down and seems like this may be too
You might say that if almost all agree on scores between 6-8, that should give more than a hint. But ME3 has a metacritic score of 89% which means that all reviewers can be wrong at the same time.
In a world where most AAA games get at least 90% by default, 78% is abysmal.
Wrecked: Revenge Revisited has a metacritic score of about 60 and I'm positive it's one of the best games of all time. Me and my mates spent maybe 1,000 hours with it and it never got old. There was no need for any other game, everyone always just wanted to play Wrecked.
Eufloria has a metacritic score of 63 and I ended up playing it for over 300 hours.
Skyrim: metacritic 94, but many people hate it and think it's a borefest.
Witcher 3: metacritic 93, but I hate it.
Everything lies in the eye of the beholder. Except for ME3, which is objectively ♥♥♥♥. Fact.
The Good:
Graphics
Combat
The Bad:
Story
Most Quests
Dialogue/Writing
Emotionless Voice Acting
Character Models
Horrible A.I.
Animations
Grinding
Uninteresting "Points of interest" scattered throughout every landscape, identical to dragon age inquisition, just to add artificial length and things to do.
End Result:
Reviewers are giving inflated scores. Nobody wants to give Mass Effect a low score. It's a beloved franchise and it stings to get a mediocre game delivered to us. Only gamespot and a few others have the nuts to be honest with themselves about this game. If it wasn't titled Mass Effect, the scores would average at least 10 points lower. 68/100 is the most correct.
Of course it's all subject to opinion, but scores are definitely inflated.
not as oldfanbase(4.6years)= 'do i love it or hate it?'
new fanbase(1month)= 'ohh shiny'
compelling stories, gone
combat system, evolve
ai system, worse
open world quest design, repe-the-hell-titive
Most AAA games don't get at least 90% default and a score of 78% isnt abysmal by any standard. It would be hard to make a more incorrect statement.
I'm actually playing the game and am a huge ME fan, played through the first game at least 10 times and the other two a few times each too. This game in many ways isn't as good and in a few ways is better.
It's in no way a bad game and it does feel like an ME game. This is more than worth the £40 and if you have any doubt about it I'd defo get it when on sale.
I'm enjoying it so far. I'm not far enough into it (3 or 4 hours so far) to give it any real review though, and I still feel like I'm learning the ropes. I agree that it feels like an ME game for sure, whereas DA:I didn't feel like Dragon Age to me at all.
My biggest gripe so far is some of the voice acting. The Selarian bigwig (Tann?) sounds like a 15-year-old kid, and there are some lines that are delivered by various characters with very unnatural emphases and moments that make it sound like the actors didn't learn their lines or even examine the dialogue, but are sitting there reading them for the first time while being recorded - AKA bad acting.
I remember one point during Liara's recorded dialogue for Ryder in his quarters, some of her voice acting sounded as if Ali Hillis just read the script from the computer and just spoke it, almost as if it just came up, you can hear it in the way Ali spoke the line as if she needed time to process it before saying it at that moment.
We all know that Ali voiced Liara well in the trilogy, but her openers on Andromeda leave a lot to be desired.
As for the Salarian Director Tann, he sounds like your typical Salarian when speaking which is typical of their voices. There is this one Salarian in ME2 in the Dantius towers you rescue, one that held a gun to your face and faints, that one sounds like a 15 year old as well. hard to call Andromeda out on the carpet for that one.
