Decided to try this game again. Found something unacceptable: When talking to people (which can change events and reputation) I found some of the text options were black, and not avaliable ... Why?

Mostly requires higher paragon/renegade charm/intimidate rating to able to pick said choice.

Typically have to focus on one or the other. Can't have both high enough in a single play through (particularly toward the end there a some critical choices which require nigh maxed out charm/intimidate).

Well not exactly true. You can put points in both if you like, but to me that's a waste of skillpoints.

so you're telling me I can't suddenly change and flux just cuz I want to?

No. There is no "re-spec" in the game. In ME2/ME3 there is, but in those the paragon/renegade thing isn't tied to skillpoints only your choices in game. As opposed to ME1 where you actively invest skills to charm or intimidate. Flawed, but that's how it is...

its just ... i talked like a wholesome person to Ashley when i saved her from the husks, and now i can't get the preaching hannar arrested

Neither could I.

Though I eventually played until Lv 59-60 New Game Plus, giving myself enough Persuasion and Intimidation to get almost everything (and for the big stuff, Persuading as I was trying to be more Paragon).

Just so you know, I think the preaching hanar is there most of the game.

if you don't deal with him, but you are able to make him leave at first encounter, you can have him arrested, or tell him he's ... a bit much, either way he'll leave
