For those playing fighting games online the first time.
Ethernet cable directly from the router is a must. Stay away from wifi. If you don't have that choice because of the shared environment. At least make sure you setup QoS for yourself for stability.

How do you do that? I did a quick Google and I'm not even sure it's something I can even do

Do they sell ethernet cables where you live?

Unless you're using a cafe's wifi or something, you should have a box in your house somewhere that provides internet. There should be holes on the back that you can connect to your pc via cable.

Also, before playing online it might be agood idea to turn down graphic settings if you computer isn't the best. Even if you and your opponent end up having good ping, it's still likely you'll end up dropping some frames as your PC struggles to keep up, creating lag.

I meant the QOS thing. I do have a router/modem/whatever but its not practical to run a cable throughout the entire house. I wouldn't care myself, but I don't live alone and I can't justify running a cable through 3 rooms and a hallway all over the floor just to benefit myself. Im not even sure if I can find a cable long enough for that.

Basically, the router and I are so far away that I use a range extender to get a WiFi signal. I think that's too far to get a cable without everyone tripping over it and looking messy, among other issues.
We're planning on selling the house in a year or so and that rules out anything like stapling the cable to the walls, drilling a hole in the ceiling and dropping it down, or something.

hurm, that's fair. What i essentially did was connect several long cat 5 and cat 6 cables together and snaked them through the house along walls, in between (carpeted) stairs, and around door frames to both hide the cable and to also prevent it from accidentally tripping anyone.

Shiki Tohno told me that wifi's fine if you're close to the router

You could potentially make use of a "powerline adapter" to get the benefits of a wired connection without having to run ethernet cables throughout your home. (Yes, the wiring that in the walls of your house that is used to supply power to outlets throughout your home can also be used to transmit data.)

I heard those don't work and aren't worth it? I can't remember which game it was, but I brought it up in a discord for an anime fighter and was met with universal disapproval. I was told it'll either do nothing or make the connection worse, so I haven't looked into it more than that.

Again, I don't live alone so I doubt people would be happy if I was to finangle the router to prioritise just me playing video games. And not evennregular video games, JUST fighting games since theyre the only ones that need so much work just to get a decent connection compared tonliterally any other online genre. Plus this looks a bit complex and I wouldn't know what rules to set or how to log into my router. I'd have to call my provider and sort that out, I guess?

Counterpoint; use a wifi and if you're losing kick the router. o3o

Some known issues with powerline adapters:
  • Has problems with too many simultaneous connections. (Less of an issue if you're the only one in the house using a powerline adapter, though it can also be an issue if you are e.g. using a torrent client -- though presumably you wouldn't be doing that while playing an online game.)
  • Lower bandwidth compared to wifi -- a lot of devices seem to advertise 80 Mbps, which might be slower than your internet connection's max speed, resulting in the download of large files being slower. (That being said, bandwidth is largely irrelevant to online gaming, as the things you care about here are latency and connection stability.)
  • If you have a house with bad wiring, you might run into packet loss issues (greater physical distances can also magnify this if it's already a problem)
  • There are some specific AFCI circuit breakers that can get tripped by power line adapter use. Most homes don't have AFCI circuit breakers (AFCI circuit breakers first hit the market in 1999, and most homes were built before then), but if you have a newer home, you might want to check to see if you have one. (Especially true if your home was built after 2014, as this is when most states including California, Texas, and New York started legally mandating them for new houses.)

Bearing all of these in mind, I still think powerline adapters are worthwhile if you care about online gaming performance. For further reading from others who have experience with this, check out these threads:

Oh, they're all $250 to $270? That's too much, I guess I'll just pass and play solo. At least virtual frontier ain't bad.

Nah join in, people make this big deal like it's a requirement. Yes wifi sucks for fighting games but it's not always an unplayable mess and there's a lot of people who'd be willing to play you so long as the connection doesn't get really bad (if it does they may also be on wifi anyway). Trust me as this is coming from someone who has played both on Ethernet and on wifi, also this game doesn't snitch on you for using wifi so you won't end up with zero games because of a wifi symbol next to your name.
