I want free roam
How is it possible to play the game freely?

You can explore within the levels, but it is not a free roaming game. The sequel may be though

your best possibility is free roaming in the training area before the main campaign.

No, but man, I really wish there was a free roam option. Maybe in the sequel.

You can make the original free roam by modding it. But sadly Steam is very strict about that.

The levels are fairly linerar/short, how would a free roam be usefull? Generally 1-3 path types, limited area, would need 3-5 levels joined for a good sized free roam.

Well you can bug to the streets and have fun around there. But that isn;t really free roam either.
